For over a hundred years, the Port of Gijón Pilots Corporation has safely and efficiently guided the manoeuvres of all kinds of vessels and floating craft in the ports of Gijón and El Musel.
We are committed to improving environmental management and protecting the environment. To that end we have implemented a management system based on the ISO 14001:2015 standard, identifying and assessing environmental regulations and the impacts of our activity from a life-cycle perspective, with continuous-improvement objectives year after year.
To provide the service, the Corporation has six pilots — experienced merchant-navy captains with proven knowledge of the port waters — together with extensive human and technical resources, safeguarding at all times the lives of crew and passengers, the environment, and the ships and cargo they carry.
In 2005 the Corporation opened its new premises in the La Sirena building. Located on the mezzanine, the office covers 200 square metres and includes a control centre that allows the pilotage service to be maintained and improved 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Premises opened in 2005 covering 200 m², including individual cabins for on-duty pilots, a kitchen, a lounge and washrooms.
A console fitted with several VHF units and a computer with electronic charts and an integrated AIS system for port traffic control.
Connection to the Port of Gijón camera surveillance system for permanent monitoring of manoeuvres.
An in-house management software system for real-time control of port traffic, in pursuit of higher quality and safety of service.
Currently three reinforced-hull, highly manoeuvrable boats for approaching vessels in the waters of the Port of Gijón.
The Corporation’s management system is certified to the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001:2015 standards, with UKAS accreditation, reflecting our commitment to quality and the environment.
